MUNSTER CRICKET UNION DIVISION 2 COUNTY KERRY V ENNIS |

18th Of May Clare narrowly failed to squeeze out a victory in their latest Munster League match, a rain affected game against County Kerry in Tralee on Sunday. Clare Captain Aash Cheema maintained his 100% record on the toss and choose to bat and the Clare openers made a solid start and with some aggressively run singles forced the Kerry team to change their approach. However, both Foley and Parti lost their wickets in successive balls meant they had to effectively restart with the score at 48-2. Four overs later when Jeremy Mace and Cheema had adjusted to the poor light and the variable bounce from the pitch the rain came in and an hours play was lost. With the game now reduced to 40 overs a side the Clare team struggled to come to terms with some accurate Kerry bowling and the slow outfield. Only Imran was able to push along the score although he was well supported by Daniel McCullough’s brief and spectacular innings of 12. At the end the cooler heads of the more experienced Kerry team prevailed and the Clare team were dismissed for 170 with 3 overs yet to come.
With the weather still looking threatening Kerry needed to get off to a quick start. If the rain had come in the game would be decided on run-rate, that is runs scored divided by overs bowled so they had to watch both the total and the 4.25 runs per over target. In the decisive innings of the match Kashif got Kerry off to an absolute flyer. He scored 52 off the 66 runs that were on the board when he was deceived by a quicker ball from Mace and they had scored at a rate off almost 9 an over. The balance swung briefly back in Clare direction when a combination of the slow bowling of Mace, Foley and Perry and some poor running by Kerry caused 5 wickets to fall for only 20 runs but the vast experience of Kerry captain Dave Ramsay told again and his calm and no-risk approach saw his team home in a tense and exciting finish. Kerry were helped in their cause by the Clare bowlers failing to control the wet and slippery ball and they conceded 30 runs and 4 extra overs in wides and this clearly would have made the finish much tighter.
These teams will meet again next week-end in the Senior Cup
